Evaluation

Technologies we used to create our film:

Final Film

This is our final film, the breif was to produce the opening scene of a thriller film. To create the suspense and tension of a thriller we used a variety of camera angles including high angle and low angle shots to show the vulnerability of the innocent child and the power of the murderer. We also used 'imovie' to edit the sound and include music and sound effects in to the film which created an eerie and tense atmosphere, incorporating creeking doors and eerie music.

Audience Feedback
For our final film we got some audience feedback. We asked a few people to watch it and comment on what they thought was good and what needed inprovement. Some of there comments include:
'It wasn't very long but i liked the way you edited it'
'I really liked the camera angles'
'The middle part i found slightly confusing, with the hand on the floor'
'It's edited well'

These were some good comments helping us understand our downfalls and greatest parts to the filming.

Poster and DVD cover for our final film

We decided to create a DVD cover for our Thriller film if it was to be sold in a shop. We made the background black because black represents darkness and fear, which links to thrillers. Also when we looked at DVD covers for other thriller films we noticed that most of them had dark or black backgrounds, for example 'Paranormal Activity' is a thriller and the DVD cover has a black background. We used deep red writing for the main writing so it stands out, also the red colour  represents blood.

We also produced a poster to advertise our film. We made the background black again to show it's a thriller. We used a picture from our film so they can see roughly what the film will be about. We made it look like blood was dripping down the image to show the film is a thriller and it will incorporate gory scenes.

Production - Technology

Using imovie:
We used imovie to upload our filming on to the apple mac, then we edited the filming in many different ways, by changing the sound, colour and adding music plus much more. We firstly uploaded our fillm when each clip was filmed, then moved each clip in to the correct places and we cut a few parts off. Once the film was in order we changed the cololour of each clip by making the saturation down to 23%. This made the clips darker, almost black and white to make the film look like it was filmed at night, creating an eerie effect. Next we edited the sound, we cut some sound out the clips which we didnt need, then added sound effects, including a door creeking open and thunder. Then we added dark music to create tension and an eerie atmosphere like thriller films usually are. Also we enphasised the sound of a few parts in our film including the keys unlocking the door and the foot steps, we created this by turning up the volume on the clips for the highest it would go. Also imovie aloud us to incorporate text t oour film, so we included the name of the film at the start and the names of the actors and directors in the clips, using red writing to represent blood.

Using the Yeti
To use the Yeti you must plug it in to the mac using the USB port, then open it up in garage band where it will be recorded, then you can add it to your filming. We used the Yeti microphone to record the news reporters voice, who is explaining what has happened to the young school girl. Then we used it as a voice over, over the news reports about the young girl. The Yeti worked really well and created a clear recording.

Using the Sony Handy Cam and the Tripod

We used the sony handy cam to film our clips. It can be plugged in to the apple mac using the USB port. It was very simply to use, we simply filmed our clips by pressing the record button and then plugged the camera in to the USB port and uploaded the filming. With this camera we could create close up shots by using the zoom button and the camera also has a light on the front so in the dark you can still see what is being filmed. We also used a tripod to create high angle shots and to reduce the shaky shots being produced. We used the triod many times while filming because it meant that the clips were not shaky, alhtough we purposely decided not to use the tripod in some shots so it looked shaky.

Making fake blood
We decided to make fake blood for a few of our scenes. To make it, we mixed golden syrup, red food colouring, flour and water. We added a lot of red food colouring to create a deep red colour. We used golden syrup to make the blood look thicker, so it didn't run off the actors skin.

Certificate Rating
Looking at other thrillers we noticed that most of them are rated a 15. So we decided our film was going to be rated a 15, this is because our film contains gory images which are inapropriate for the eyes of children younger than 15. So our film will be aimed at older teenages to adults. I think our film will be most popluar with teenage girls because it's based around a young girl. I also think it would be popular with adults because it involves kidnapping and murder which happens regularly in the ever day world, so people can relate to it.

Mind map for new final film

This is the mind map which we produced for our new final film. We wrote down the things which we wanted to incorporate in our film, like the characters, and who was going to be the innocent character and who was going to be the violent character/ murderer.

Film Title

For the title of our film we decided to choose 'The Nightmare That Came True'. Although it's a very simple title we chose this because we knew it would avoid confusion about what is happening in our film. Helping the audience have a better undrstanding of our film. We searched the internet to check this name had not already been used, luckily it hasn't. We also thought this name shows the film is a thriller as nightmares are usually associated with evil and horror. It also suggests to the audince that it may happen during the night, which many thriller and horror movies do.

Location shots for final film

These are some photos which i took of the locations which we filmed in. I photographed the doors which we used, the corridor and the store room which the young girl was found dead in. We chose the school as our location because the corridors look eerie and they can be made dark as theres no windows apart from the classroom windows which creates more atmosphere. Although the lights are on in these photos in our film the lights are off because it makes it feel more eerie and like it's at night.

New Final Film

As a group we decided to restart our final film. This is because we found that our other film didnt fit in to the thriller genre. It didnt incorporate enough suspence and tension, we also thought we needed more variety of camera anlges.

For our new film we decided to film it at school because we thought it was an eerie setting for a thriller movie. Its all about a nightmare that came true. It begins with a young 13 year old girl in bed, she's having a nightmare, so she is moving a lot and sweating. It then fades out in to the nightmare. The nightmare involves the girl running from someone, although you can not see the other person you can tell she is scared and running from something. She runs up the stairs and along the corridor. We made it so that the corridors looked really dark using editing, and we made the lights flash to create tension. We used a low angle shot to show her running through the corridor, we also put tense music over the top and the sound of thunder to create a dramatic effect. The girl then goes up to the door and a hand falls in front of her covered in blood, we used a point of view shot as she looks at the hand so it makes the audience feel on edge, creating tension. She then gets grabbed by someone as shes stepping back. We see the footsteps of a man using a low angle shot, which makes him look intimidating, he then unlocks a cupboard door and theres a close up on the hand, we also used dramatic music and we enphasised the sound of the keys unlocking the door. At the end the girls found dead in the cupboard. Then te screen goes fuzzy like a t.v gone wrong, then the news comes up and the lady explains that a girl was found dead in the cupborad at a school. So the nightmare comes true!!

Camera Angles:
We used a variety of camera angles in our final film, to show the vunerable characters and the powerful and intimidating characters.

This is a screen shot fomr our film. It's of the evil male chracter, using a low angle shot hides his identity to create mystery, but also it shows he's intimidating.

This is a screen shot from our film. Its a high angle shot on the dead girl. We decided to use this camera angle because it makes the young girl seem vunerable.

This is the hand of the unkown male chracter. We used a close up for this scene where he's unlocking the door because it makes it more significant, also it creates tension as the audience don't know whats going to be behind the door.

We also used a framing shot as the young girl runs up to the window of a class room door. This makes the audience feel more involved in the film because it's almost like your in the room she runs up to. This makes it more interesting for the audience to watch.

Lighting:
In our film we made the scenes dark by turning off all the lights in the corridors. Also we made the lights flash to create an eerie atmospere. We simply turned the lights on and off and the lights all flashed one by one. This created a bit more light so you could see significant things. Like the hand on the floor. When we were editing the film we also made the scenes darker by changing the colour saturation to 23%. We made it darker because thrillers are associated with darkness.

This is the the scene where we flashed the lights. You can see from this picture that their just flashing on.

Costumes:

The male chracter:
For the evil male chracter we chose to dress him in scientific clothes because this links to the fact that we filmed it in a school. Also we got him to wear green clothes to hide his identity. And it almost looks like he's prepared to get messy/ kill the young girl.

The young girl:
We decided to dress the girl in school uniform when she was in her dream because it shows she's at school, also it shows she is a young girl. The first scene where she is having a nightmare we dressed her in typical night wear.

Preliminary Task

For our preliminary task we filmed at an isolated farm. There's two female characters who have a conversation in a barn/shed. We used a few different camera angles including a close up and a low angle. However for our final film we need to incorporate a larger variety of camera angles. We also had a few shaky shots in our preliminary task which will need to be inproved in our final film because it will make the audience feel disoriented. Although we purposely created shaky shots, to show the person is running. For the editing we slowed down the scene where the girl is walking out of the barn, this created an eerie atmosphere. We also made each scene darker by reducing the saturation, this created a creepy atmosphere, like it was night.
